Es scheint, als habe STARZ endlich einen Nachfolger für Andy Whitfield gefunden. Nach langem hin und her, und viel brodelnder Gerüchtekücke die wir über uns ergehen lassen mussten, fiel die Wahl des US-Pay TV Senders schliesslich auf den Australier Liam McIntyre. Der hatte kürzlich erst einen Auftritt in der HBO Miniserie The Pacific.

“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”

In the release put out by Starz, the network referred to the “grueling and rigorous audition process” that McIntyre went through to claim the title role — and they’re not exaggerating. According to sources, McIntyre — whose slight build initially led execs to rule him out as Sparty — underwent two-plus months of boot camp to bulk up for the part.

Ich hatte es schon mal gesagt, und machs an dieser Stelle nochmal, auch wenn es sich vielleicht pessimistisch anhört (obwohl ich das jetzt nicht wirklich bin): Einerlei wie lange Liam McIntyre freiwillig sich von irgendwelchen Drillern in einen Boot Camp erniedrigen lässt, und wieviel Eiweiss Pulver der frisst, um wie ein Gladiator zu wirken: Gleichwertig kann und wird er Andy Whitfield nicht ersetzen können. Never ever. Auch wenn Andy nur für 13 Episoden den mystischen Helden gemimt hat. Aber Blood and Sand ist mit Ihm “geboren”! Nun denn .. bald geht´s mit den Dreharbeiten erstmal los .. und wenn dann die ersten Trailer kommen, wissen wir mehr. Abwarten. Tee trinken. Und dann mal schauen wie Liam McIntyre mit Schwert, Schild und Dreizack umgehen kann.
